What is The UroLift?

With the use of advanced endoscopic guidance, UroLift System treatment works by using implants to elevate your prostate, so it stops being in the way of your urethra. If you have tried other therapies and medications that have proved ineffective, then UroLift System may be a successful option for you. At Kasraeian Urology in Jacksonville, FL, our board-certified urologists Drs. Ali Kasraeian and Ahmad Kasraeian offer the UroLift procedure for men who suffer from an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). To help stop the need for frequent trips to the bathroom, pelvic pain, and additional symptoms, this innovative treatment is placed on both sides of the prostate to allow better passage for urine to exit the bladder.

Who is a candidate for UroLift?

In addition to having a slightly enlarged prostate, you may be a good candidate for the UroLift System treatment if you experience the following:

  • Have difficulties urinating (including starting, stopping, dribbling, or being unable to fully empty the bladder)
  • Notice some blood in the urine
  • Get up in the night to urinate
  • Not have any other existing infections

During your consultation at Kasraeian Urology, a thorough digital rectal exam will be conducted in order to evaluate the level of inflammation of the prostate.

How does UroLiftwork?

UroLift is performed as an in-office procedure at our state-of-the-art Jacksonville, FL, facility. During the procedure, you will be lying down in one of our spacious treatment rooms with your legs slightly elevated. Sedation or a local anesthetic may be used to help make the UroLift procedure more comfortable.

Using a handheld endoscopic device that is inserted into the penis, the UroLift will be implanted on each side of the prostate. A 19-gauge needle will be utilized to place at least two implants on each side. No incisions are necessary, and the UroLift implants will effectively hold back the tissue that is blocking the urethra to allow urine to flow.

Following your treatment, Dr. Ali Kasraeian or Dr. Ahmad Kasraeian will provide you with the appropriate aftercare instructions. These include attending a follow-up appointment so that your healing progress can be carefully monitored.

How Long Is Recovery After A UroLift Procedure?

After a UroLift procedure, most patients will be able to go home without a catheter, returning to work and their normal routine in about three days. Some may experience mild discomfort, urinary urgency, light blood in the urine, or abdominal tenderness. These are normal and temporary, usually resolving in about 2 – 4 weeks. Dr. Kasraeian will give you post-procedure care instructions, but typically, patients will be advised to avoid strenuous activity for at least one week after the procedure. Most patients begin to experience relief from BPH symptoms in about two weeks.
