Prostate Cancer Q & A

What’s prostate cancer?

The male prostate gland is about the size of a walnut and surrounds the urethra below the bladder, just in front of the rectum.

Prostate cancer results when malignant cells multiply in the prostate gland. Of the several types of prostate cancer, the majority grow slowly. Some types, though, are rapid-growth cancers.

Am I at risk of prostate cancer?

All men carry some risk of prostate cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, about 13 of every 100 American men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime.

African-American men are more likely to get prostate cancer, develop the disease at a younger age, and are more likely to have a severe form of it than other men in the United States. Obesity and having a family member who’s had prostate cancer are also associated with an increased chance of developing the disease.

Your risk also increases with age. Men 55-69 or who have other risk factors are encouraged to get screened for prostate cancer. Detecting prostate cancer in its early stages increases your chance of successful treatment.

How’s prostate cancer treated?

If you’ve been diagnosed with prostate cancer, your treatment options depend on the type of prostate cancer you have, how quickly the disease is progressing, if it’s spread to any tissues outside the prostate gland, and the risks and benefits of specific treatments.

Available treatments of prostate cancer include:

  • Active surveillance: regular blood tests, rectal exams, and/or biopsies to monitor its progress
  • Androgen deprivation therapy: deprives cancer cells of the hormones necessary to their survival
  • HIFU: high-energy sound waves targeting the cancer cells
  • Cryotherapy: freezing diseased tissue to kill the cancer cells
  • Prostatectomy: surgery to remove the gland and in some cases surrounding tissue and lymph nodes
  • Radiation therapy: using high-powered rays of energy to kill cancer cells
