HIFU Q & A
What’s prostate cancer?
Prostate cancer is the proliferation of malignant cells in the tissue of the prostate gland. There are several different types of prostate cancer. Many are slow-growing, while others grow more rapidly.
Though highly treatable, prostate cancer is the second most common among American men. Most men diagnosed with prostate cancer recover completely.
What is HIFU?
HIFU — high-intensity focused ultrasound — uses the energy of sound waves to destroy prostate cancer cells. HIFU is administered using a robotically controlled probe inserted in your rectum. Ultrasound or MRI imaging is used to direct the sound waves precisely into the cancerous tissue without damaging the surrounding area.
What are the benefits of HIFU?
HIFU has shown great results when treating prostate cancer that hasn’t spread beyond the prostate gland. It is a minimally invasive procedure that offers several benefits:
- Minimal discomfort
- Minimal recovery time
- Less adverse effects than radiation
- No scarring
While many treatments of prostate cancer can cause urinary incontinence or erectile dysfunction, these concerns are usually temporary with HIFU.
What should I expect during a HIFU procedure?
The expert urologists at Kasraeian Urology perform HIFU as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. It can take up to four hours to complete.
During the treatment, your physician will insert the ultrasound probe into your rectum and then guide the probe remotely while watching MRI images on a monitor.
When the procedure is done, you’ll spend some time recovering as the anesthesia wears off. You’ll need to have someone drive you to and from your HIFU appointment.
Am I a candidate for HIFU?
HIFU is a good option for many types of localized prostate cancers. Your Kasraeian Urology provider can also recommend HIFU if you have tried radiation or other treatments without success or if you have recurring prostate cancer.
HIFU isn’t covered under some insurance plans, but many men feel the cost of the procedure is worth the benefits. If you’re a candidate for HIFU, the team at Kasraeian Urology will discuss all financing options with you, so you can make an informed choice about the procedure.
