Pudendal Neuralgia


 

Definition: An entrapment or injury of the pudendal nerve resulting in inflammatory nerve pain.

Symptoms:

  • Pain can be intermittent or constant in the vulvar, perineal or rectal area
  • Voiding dysfunction and/or constipation
  • Painful intercourse
  • Pelvic pain better in the morning/  aggravated by standing or lying down

Initiating Events:

  • Bicycle riding
  • Tailbone injury
  • Staining at stools
  • Childbirth trauma
  • Biomechanical  Issues (i.e. Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction)
  • Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
  • Chronic vaginal infections
  • Pelvic Surgery

Treatment:

  • Local therapy with ice or heat
  • Trigger point injections
  • Joint stabilization or mobilization
  • Nerve release
  • Relief of constipation or straining to void
