HIFU Treatment for Prostate Cancer

How can high-intensity focused ultrasound treatment treat prostate cancer?

If you've been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer it can be a scary experience. It's important to know that our medical team of urologists can provide you with the support and treatment options to manage your prostate cancer. Our Jacksonville, FL, urologists Dr. Ahmad Kasraeian and Dr. Ali Kasraeian at Kasraeian Urology can discuss the different treatment options available to you. In some cases, you may be ideal for a non-surgical treatment option known as high-intensity focused ultrasound treatment, or HIFU.

How does HIFU treatment work?

HIFU treatment uses focal ultrasound technology to target and destroy cancer cells within the prostate. Just as a magnifying glass can be used to reflect light to burn a hole through a piece of paper, HIFU works similarly to target and kill cancer cells.

The outpatient procedure can take up to four hours. HIFU treatment is performed under anesthesia. Once under the effects of anesthesia, we will direct a very small ultrasound device into the rectum. Sound waves emitted from the ultrasound device will help us to see the prostate gland clearly on the screen. These focused ultrasonic waves will penetrate the wall of the rectum to target the cancer cells within the gland.

Is HIFU treatment right for me?

To determine whether or not you are an ideal candidate for HIFU treatment, we will need to perform imaging tests and a biopsy of the prostate. The imaging scan will allow our Jacksonville, FL, urology specialists to determine how much the cancer has spread throughout the prostate. A biopsy will also tell us whether or not cancer has spread outside the prostate.

If cancer has spread to other areas outside the prostate then HIFU treatment will not be the best approach to treating your prostate cancer. Patients who are dealing with prostate cancer in the beginning stages may be ideal candidates for HIFU treatment since this treatment targets the whole prostate. If you’ve had prostate cancer in the past and the cancer has returned you may also benefit from this nonsurgical cancer treatment.
